Following our discussion last class
about whether some social innovations push our own ideas on people in
developing countries, I reaffirmed my own opinion on the matter. I'm
obviously a person who thinks social innovations are important in
helping the developing world, otherwise I wouldn't be taking this
class. However, I can see the point that a lot of innovations are
things that we, in our daily lives that are vastly different from the
lives of people in developing countries, consider useful and
necessary. While that may be true, there is no disservice done to the
people of developing countries in giving them access to things that
are easily accessible in other parts of the world, and innovations
aren't forced on the developing world, they are simply introduced. So
perhaps the real question is whether or not these social innovations
actually cause social impact, and whether more time should be spent
on innovations that actually help in solving life or death problems.
